PRESIDENT’S LETTER

With the coming of spring and nice weather, I hope each of you will continue to attend our luncheons to hear our outstanding speakers.  Our March speaker, Dr. Richard Burris with the Hoover Institute at Stanford University, shared with us some of his incredible background with Republican Administrations, and then summarized with ways we can make the Republicans effective today.  Thanks to our program chairman Alice Story for all the great speakers.  Also, a special thanks to Anita DeSmet for the Easter table decoration.  Anita had crocheted a yellow Easter chick around a plastic egg filled with candy for each place setting.  What a lot of wonderful work and thought!  Our heartfelt thanks to Anita.

Our April speaker will be Dr. Robert Burnett.  He is a physician who works in emergency care and was our former Santa Clara County Republican Party Chairman.  Please plan on joining us April 7 for lunch and the opportunity to hear this great Republican speak on health issues.

Membership and registering voters will be some of our main focus for the coming months.  Volunteers are needed and will be most appreciated.  The Northern Division CFRW Spring Conference has five SVRWF members attending.  Report to follow in next newsletter.

SVRWF is located in Region VIII, which is all of Santa Clara County.  There are three clubs in the county.  Yearly, we have a Regional Conference for our county and this year it will be May 12.  Since many SVRWF members prefer attending local area meetings, mark your calendar for May 12 as you will have the opportunity to hear a speaker seldom available.  We will not have our usual May meeting, but will work and attend the May 12 conference.  SVRWF anticipates a good response for the May 12 Region VIII conference.

My best to you from your president, Doris Whitney, Silicon Valley Republican Women Federated.

Text Box: “Line-Drawing Issue Crucial to Governor's Plans”

By Daniel Weintraub
Sacramento Bee Columnist
March 8, 2005

Of all the items on Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's agenda for 2005, the sleeper - as a matter of both policy and politics - is his proposal to change the way political boundary lines are drawn. The idea has the potential to change fundamentally the way California government works. And it is Schwarzenegger's secret weapon in seeking to portray his entire, sweeping program as a movement for reform.

Sitting among the governor's red-hot proposals to overhaul the state's pension system, write new budgeting rules and limit tenure for public school teachers, his proposal to take the power to draw district lines away from the Legislature and give it to an independent commission stands out - by not standing out.

It was this week in 1836 that Texas declared its independence from Mexico. Now I understand California is thinking about doing the same thing.
