PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Our January meeting was a great beginning for 2005.  Santa Clara County Supervisor Don Gage brought a positive message to us regarding Santa Clara County.  Supervisor Gage discussed the Santa Clara County budget.  He stated that he believed the Santa Clara

County budget recovery would be fine in two years with careful cut backs and employee job improvement.  Supervisor Gage speaks to our group once a year.  Our best wishes to this dedicated, hard working Republican supervisor.

Our program chairman, Alice Story, has been busy scheduling speakers for our meetings.

Thanks to Alice's work, we were able to have Supervisor Gage speak to us in January.  Our luncheon meeting speakers are always interesting, and we look forward to seeing each of you at our luncheons.

On January 20 at noontime (Eastern Time), President George W. Bush was sworn into office for his second term.  What a great day for Republicans!

Thank you to the new members and existing member renewals.  The response has been great for memberships.  As we start planning the activities for the year, feel free to volunteer for a committee.

Our February speaker is Jim Cuneen, the former California State Assemblyman and current CEO of the Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce, who we all know well.

A Note From The Treasurer…

To speed up check in at the luncheon, it would help if each member would pay by check.  It will make accounting easier and eliminate the need to bring an unknown amount of change.  Please have your check already written prior to coming to the luncheon.  Of course, cash is always welcome, but please try to have the $16.00 correct change.

From the website of the National Federation of Republican Women:

The Iraqi people are longing for democracy after decades of dictatorship and oppression, according to a member of a leading Shiite political party.

• This was confirmed by a survey conducted by the International Republican Institute in December, showing that 67.4% of Iraqis support going forward with the elections as scheduled.

• According to Iraq's independent election committee, 7,471 candidates — representing 75 political entities, 27 organizations and nine coalitions — plan to participate in the national assembly elections.

• This election process — to create a transitional national assembly that will begin to build durable democratic institutions and draft an Iraqi constitution — is for the benefit of all Iraqis and does not to favor one class or group

• The new Iraq will be for all Iraqis and not for any one particular group, faction or religion.  It will represent all the Arabs, Kurds, Turkmens and Assyrians, and any other minorities or religions.

• No one wants injustice or inequality except the terrorists. That was the old policy under the racist regime of Saddam Hussein — a policy that led to mass graves all over the country — and the terrorists today would like to re-create it.
