As 2005 winds down, and we begin to plan for 2006, I would like to thank everyone for supporting Silicon Valley Republican Women Federated. It has been a busy year with the special election in November and a full schedule of interesting, educational speakers. We were successful with our contributions to support the veterans with the Fisher House fundraising and the VA Hospital. At the December meeting we collected contributions for the Sunnyvale Community Services. The Federation encourages our clubs to be supportive of our communities, our Republican candidates, registering voters and member education. 2006 will be a very good year.
Our December meeting speaker was Don Wolfe, President, Silicon Valley Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse. Mr. Wolfe also shared highlights of his visit in the Oval Office with President Bush in February 2005. Our officers for 2006 were installed, and I will be serving you again for 2006. I look forward to seeing everyone at our first 2006 meeting on January 6. I hope each of you are having a wonderful Christmas and are looking forward to a very Happy New Year.

FISHER HOUSE UPDATE
Our donation to the Fisher House this year exceeded $800.00 which went directly to the Palo Alto House that is currently under construction, if you are interested in making a donation feel free to contact Nancy Wark at 408-356-7879 or nancywark1@hotmail.com this is such a benefit to our Military and their families. We have learned from an article Alice Wilson shared with us that Denzel Washington was visiting one of the newly opened Fisher Houses and took a tour and was so impressed he asked what it would cost to build one, and when told he opened his check book and wrote a check right then. Don’t you wish the media gave more attention to this show of support for our Men and Women in Service than the attention the media gives the Alec Baldwin’s of the entertainment field? We also have a new opportunity coming our way starting in January to support the Fisher House in Palo Alto. Jen Jasper and Mika Storz have agreed to Chair a committee to help get items the Fisher house has on their wish list. So please look for a filer about this at our January Meeting and see what you can donate to this worthy endeavor. In the mean time you can visit the Palo Alto Fisher House website at http://www.fisherhousepa.com/about.html and learn more about this wonder program. We thank both Jen and Mika for stepping up to Chair this committee.

NATIONAL / WASHINGTON, D.C.
Congress was out of session during the Thanksgiving holiday, but legislative activity prior to that included the introduction of the EXPENSE Act (HR 4129) by Rep. Pete Sessions, which would expand incentives for American enterprise to reinvest in their businesses, new equipment, and people to run that equipment. HR 4241, the Deficit Reduction Act (budget reconciliation bill) passed 217-215. The Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2006—Conference Report (HR 3010) failed 209-224.
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said promised to use the "constitutional option" should Democrats filibuster Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito. Frist did not say when he would move to change Senate rules. The Majority Leader could move to change the rules immediately if a filibuster is invoked. There is also consideration of letting a Democratic filibuster run its course for a small amount of time, to let observers see the Democrats' obstructive tactics before the rules are changed. It is thought that a Democrat filibuster of Sam Alito hurts the public perception of their Party while helping that of the Republicans. In this case, the Democrats are the unfair aggressor. -- Fox News Sunday, 12/11/05.
Harry Reid Eyes Patriot Act Filibuster, Friday, Dec. 9, 2005 10:27 p.m. EST
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid may be about to follow top Democrats Howard Dean and Nancy Pelosi over the cliff on national security and defense issues - by launching a filibuster against the Patriot Act. Congressional Republicans are pressing for a four-year extension of the measure, which has been widely credited with helping to prevent major terrorist attacks in the U.S. since 9/11. A key provision of the Act allows intelligence officials to cooperate with law enforcement in terrorist investigations, which had been banned during the Clinton administration. But apparently Sen. Reid doesn't think that's very important.

Will backers be back in '06?: Criticism is growing among Inland Republicans against Gov. Schwarzenegger By M. DeArmond, Riverside Press-Enterprise
A backlash against Gov. Schwarzenegger is growing in the Inland area as Republicans consider rescinding their support for his re-election bid and call for the firing of a Democrat he appointed. The discussions have grown in intensity over the past week since Schwarzenegger named Susan Kennedy, a member of former Gov. Davis' administration, as his chief of staff. Reactions have included calls for the GOP to officially withdraw its support of Schwarzenegger's 2006 candidacy, demands that he fire Kennedy and even one party leader's resignation over the matter.
A Supreme moderate By the San Francisco Chronicle 12/12/05
A centrist Republican woman, not a polarizing payoff for the right, is headed for California's high court. Carol Corrigan, a state appeals court judge, will replace Janice Rogers Brown, a conservative ideologue named by Bush to a federal appeals court in Washington. The contrast couldn't be more instructive.
Arnold weathers a stormy year By Steve Geissinger, Oakland Tribune
Three words say it all about California politics in 2005 — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Republican actor-turned-politician was elected in an unprecedented recall in late 2003 and rode his celebrity status through 2004 as he successfully began tackling the state's persistent deficit at the ballot box. Then suddenly in 2005 he changed the plot, his popularity in a Democratic state plummeted, and Californians are now waiting to see where his re-election effort goes in 2006. Early in 2005, he launched his so-called "Year of Reform." He said If the Democrat-dominated Legislature balked, he'd go around them again as he did in 2004. But this time, unions and other Democratic constituencies claimed his proposals were a partisan attack and said he'd veered to the right.

Democrats back citizenship for illegals - Plan allows aliens who pay $2,000 fine, back taxes to seek permanent residency
The Democratic National Committee insisted Saturday that efforts to secure the nation's borders shouldn't shut out an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants and their families already living in the U.S The DNC wrapped up its fall meetings in Phoenix by unanimously passing three resolutions related to illegal immigration, showing clearer unity on the issue than sharply divided Republicans. The main document calls for more effective border security but also says immigration reform should allow illegal workers to "earn the rights and responsibilities of U.S. citizenship."…
N.Y. GOP Leaders Tell Pirro to Drop Out By MARC HUMBERT AP
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York's Republican Party leaders recommended Monday that Jeanine Pirro abandon her struggling campaign to challenge Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and instead run for state attorney general. State GOP Chairman Stephen Minarik said no vote was taken but that was the consensus of the county leaders. Rockland County Chairman Vincent Reda said the support for a Pirro switch was "overwhelming." There was no immediate comment from the Pirro campaign.
Also, the state's county chairmen voted in favor of having former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld run for governor in his native New York, Minarik said. Weld and former state Assembly Minority Leader John Faso pressed for the GOP's county chairmen to take the vote.
Councilman crusades to continue investigation
By Edwin Garcia, San Jose Mercury News
Two days before San Jose leaders are expected to decide whether to end the investigation into the mayor's secret pact with a contracted trash hauler, Councilman David Cortese on Sunday made a campaign-like appearance outside a shopping mall seeking public support for continuing the inquiry. Cortese and a handful of volunteers with stacks of fliers stopped holiday shoppers at random, asking if they had heard of the scandal involving Mayor Ron Gonzales and Norcal Waste Systems, and whether they cared to sign a petition urging that the independent investigation continue.

"If the current tone of debate in Washington wins out, future generations will wonder how the United States collapsed upon its war effort. They will ask: Where did the defeatism arise? Was it a crisis of will? Was it a political game? They will compare it unfavorably to the relative resilience of World War II, Korea and possibly even Vietnam. We don't yet know whether Washington is in the process of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. But certainly the jaws of defeat are not agape, except among Washington naysayers." —The Washington Times
Recent Bureau of Economic Analysis reports prove standard Demo accusations about the GOP being the party of the rich are really liberals projecting themselves onto their opponents. States voting for President Bush last year were poorer than those for Kerry. Tellingly, states with the highest per capita income and stagnant income growth are trending Democrat while states with lower income but dramatically higher growth are trending Republican. These reports illustrate the fact that conservative policies have established the GOP as the party of choice for states enjoying higher growth rates for income and population. In 2004, 97 of the 100 fastest-growing counties in America voted Republican. Many of these counties are in "red" states, which continue to take electoral votes away from the blue states. -- Bureau of Economic Analysis
Michael Moore Denies He Owns Halliburton Stock!
As reported by both 'WorldNetDaily" and "Newsmax".Com , Michael Moore Denied, before a public audience Last week, That he owns or has ever owned any stock ever! Never mind Stock in "Halliburton", Vice President Dick Cheney's Former employer that the "Left" has learned to Hate! "Michael Moore own Halliburton stock?" He Asked the crowd? "See, that's like a great comedy line. I know it's not true - I mean, I've never owned a share of stock in my life." There's just one problem with that denial, says Schweizer, author of the best-seller book "Do As I Say (Not As I Do)." "I've got the tax returns of Moore's non-profit foundation to prove it!" – a non-profit foundation for which there are only two officers, Moore and his wife. It must be the definition of the word "own" that is the source of controversy, suggests Schweizer.
"Pomona College is in dire need of a gender-neutral restroom in the Smith Campus Center. As the situation currently stands, the campus center only has gender-specific facilities, creating an uncomfortable, exclusive and unsafe environment for students at the Claremont Colleges who do not choose to conform to heteronormative identities." —editorial in Student Life, Pomona College's paper
QUOTED
"December 7, 1941—a date which will live in infamy—the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan... Always will we remember the character of the onslaught against us. No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory." —Franklin D. Roosevelt
"[T]here is no reason...that young American soldiers need to be going into the homes of Iraqis in the dead of night, terrorizing kids and children, you know, women, breaking sort of the customs of the—of—of—of—historical customs, religious customs, whether you like it or not. Iraqis should be doing that." —John Kerry
"The period between 9/11 and Iraq was not a good time for America. [The Jihadis] are not evil—they just have a different perspective." —MSNBC Softballer Chris Matthews on "different perspectives"
"In some ways [Hillary] would be [better than me] because of what we did together. First, she has the Senate experience I didn't have. Second, she would have had the eight years in the White House. I think she wouldn't make as many mistakes because, you know, we're older and more mature, and she is far more experienced now in all the relevant ways than I was when I took office. So I think in a way she has the best of both worlds." —Bill Clinton
"I am extremely concerned by a fundamentalist shift in many houses of worship and in government, as church and state have become increasingly intertwined in ways previously thought unimaginable." —Bible-belt Baptist Jimmy Carter
"America is, essentially, a conservative nation on most issues. Liberalism is an attempt to change the nation's culture more than an attempt to accurately represent it." —Mac Johnson
"Terrorists are also winning the psychological warfare, partly because the jihadists are unified behind a goal and we often are not. They want territory and they want to kill 'infidels.' American leftists want 'peace,' without realizing that peace is a byproduct of defeating evil. The left also wants to use the war for partisan political gain and will seek to deprive President Bush of any credit for victory because it could benefit him politically. How sick is that?" —Cal Thomas
"Fed up with being endlessly told 'the American people' have turned against the war in Iraq, Republicans asked the Democrats to show what they had in their hand and vote on a resolution to withdraw the troops. By a vote of 403-3, the House of Representatives wasn't willing to bet that 'the American people' want to pull out of Iraq. (This vote also marked the first time in recent history that the Democrats did not respond to getting their butts kicked by demanding a recount.)" —Ann Coulter
PERSPECTIVE
National Strategy for Victory in Iraq
The following document articulates the broad strategy the President set forth in 2003 and provides an update on our progress as well as the challenges remaining. "The United States has no intention of determining the precise form of Iraq's new government. That choice belongs to the Iraqi people. Yet, we will ensure that one brutal dictator is not replaced by another. All Iraqis must have a voice in the new government, and all citizens must have their rights protected.
Rebuilding Iraq will require a sustained commitment from many nations, including our own: we will remain in Iraq as long as necessary, and not a day more." -- President George W. Bush February 26, 2003…

"This is what I fear about our elites in government and media, who will decide our immigration policy. It is that they will ignore the human questions and focus instead, as they have in the past, only on economic questions (we need the workers) and political ones (we need the Latino vote). They think that's the big picture. It's not. What goes on in the human heart is the big picture. Again: What does it mean when your first act is to break the laws of your new country? What does it mean when you know you are implicitly supported in lawbreaking by that nation's ruling elite? What does it mean when you know your new country doesn't even enforce its own laws?... Our elites are lucky people. They were born in a suburb, went to Yale, and run the world from a desk. Which means this great question, immigration, is going to be decided by people who don't know what it is to sleep on a bench. Who don't know what it is to earn your space, your place... The problem with our elites as they make our immigration policy is not that they have compassion and open-mindedness. It is that they are unknowing and empty-headed." —Peggy Noonan
