PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
It’s now over a week since our last meeting. I am still thinking of all the thoughts Professor George Marotta from the Hover Institute gave us to stir our minds. His very soft spoken delivery emphasized every point he wanted to make. He based his talk on facts and history. How fortunate we are to have the Hoover Institute and so may groups of learned people all around us. I saw in the Los Gatos News that Bill Evers, who spoke to us last year about his trip to Iraq, was appointed by President Bush as Assistant Secretary at the Office of Education for Planning, Evaluating, and Policy Development. He will be taking leave from the Hoover Institute to take this special assignment.
I was happy to see Edith Zitelli attend our meeting. She is President of the Palo Alto Republican Women’s Federated Club. I would like to see our clubs going to each others meetings. You can be sure to have a good speaker and meet other Republican women here in Silicon Valley. Our next program will feature Gloria Hom. She is a retired Professor from Foothill College where she was the head of the political science department. She is going to talk about our governor’s new budget. Don’t’ forget to invite a friend, a neighbor, or a family member to hear her and meet other Republicans. Our Vice President Carol Greenleaf is lining up some great speakers for the year. When you get your newsletter be sure to make a note on your calendar to come to our meeting.
I am excited about going to Eureka for the CFRW Spring Convention, Northern Division meeting in March. Alice Wilson and Shirley Harvey and I will attend, take notes, and report back to the club. Our next board meeting will be at the home of Barbara Furguson, 505 Inverness Way, Sunnyvale, (408) 739 0795. See you at this months meeting.
Ellen Longworth,
President, SVRWF

LEGISLATION
California Update from CRWF
AB 16 is currently in the committee on Health; Assembly Bill 16 was introduced by democrat Sally Leiber. This is the same woman who has introduced the no-spanking bill. AB 16 would require all girls entering sixth grade to have a vaccine that will prevent them from contracting some of the strains of the human papillomavirus, HPV. Some of the strains that the vaccine covers can cause cervical cancer. CFRW OPPOSES AB 16.
SB 113 is the bill that affects the Presidential Primary election in California at a cost of around one hundred million dollars. This bill is currently in the committee on Elections and Redistricting. THE CFRW OPPOSES SB 113.
SB 41 - The Corporation Tax Law exempts certain organizations from taxation, as provided. This bill would provide that payments made by an exempt organization, as defined, on or after October 26, 2006, and before June 1, 2007, to any family member of a firefighter who died as a result of the October 2006 Esperanza Incident fire in Southern California would be treated as payments made in furtherance of the charitable purpose of that organization. The Governor signed SB 41 into law on Wednesday, February 7.
AB 157, George Plescia R-75 -- Existing law specifies that the Presidential primary election be held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in June in any year evenly divisible by the number 4. Existing law also specifies that the statewide direct primary election be held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in June of each even-numbered year, and be consolidated with the Presidential primary election in any year in which the statewide direct primary is in a year evenly divisible by the number 4. This bill would instead provide that the Presidential primary election be held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in February in any year evenly divisible by the number 4. The addition of the Presidential primary election in February would impose a state-mandated local program. This bill contains other related provisions to other existing laws. California Federation of Republican Women OPPOSES this Senate Bill.
National Update from CFRW/NFRW
The Democrats’ Dangerous War Strategy
Instead of proposing a plan that will lead
us to victory, the Democrats are choosing to make success in Iraq nearly
impossible. Their focus is on ending the war, not victory. In an effort to end
the war, they will use tactics that will make it hard for the troops to do
their job. Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan noted, “Their
plan will introduce riders onto bills to prevent certain units from deploying.
They will try to limit the President's constitutional power to determine the
length and number of deployments. They will attempt to keep the Pentagon from
replacing troops who rotate out of Iraq. They may even try to limit how our
troops operate by, for example, prohibiting our armed forces from creating and
operating bases in Iraq.”
Please write a letter to the editor about this dangerous and unacceptable
plan. Contacts can be found at

Other
GOP aims to draw voters’ attention to
Dems’ tactics, The Hill, February 5, 2007
During the first month of the
Democratic-controlled Congress, Republicans held numerous press conferences on
Capitol Hill to vent their frustration over being locked out of the
legislative process. Many accused Democrats of violating House rules to push
their legislation through.

32ND ADVOCACY WORKSHOP APRIL 23-24TH
The CFRW will have their annual advocacy workshop April 23 and 24th, 2007 at the Hyatt across from the State Capitol in Sacramento. The club encourages our members to attend. This is an excellent opportunity to engage younger people with a visit to our state capital and learn about the power of advocacy. If you are interested in attending the workshops contact Ellen Longworth for more information.
There is a new campaign sweeping across America called Red Fridays. The goal of this campaign is to have as many people as possible wear something red on every Friday until all of our troops come home. Please pass this information along to your relatives, co-workers, friends, and any one else who will listen. This campaign is an excellent vehicle to show our solidarity and our unceasing support and admiration for our troops.
