As a proponent of maintaining strong central committees, Tom continues to serve as the Chairman of the Contra Costa Republican Party, his home county, where he has been unanimously elected for three consecutive terms.  Under Tom’s leadership, Contra Costa led the state among g large counties in Republican turnout.  In addition, Tom is the publisher of www.politicalvanguard.com, an online news and commentary magazine and features a weekly column from Tom.  Tom also has written a book with the same title as his talk.  Bring your checkbook if you would like to purchase a copy for friends and family.

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE (2/22/08)

After I attended the CRWF Winter Conference in Stockton, I came away with the feeling that we have some really strong officers for 2008.  It’s a good thing too because we need all the help we can get.  So many members are undecided and now that we’re down to John McCain, there are strong feelings that he is not the conservative man we want.

At our meeting on March 6th you will meet and hear a young Republican who is inspiring.  His name is Tom Del Bacarro and he is the California State Vice Chairman of the G.O.P.  He was one the key speakers at the N.D.C.F.R.W. convention this last Fall in Monterey.

I have heard him speak on radio (KSFO) and he has written a book.  He is an outstanding example of all the things you expect a food Republican to be.   Please plan on coming to hear him speak.  You will leave the meeting with a renewed confidence in the G.O.P.   We must do al we can to keep the Democrats out of the White House.

Be sure to bring those donations for the troops in Iraq to our next meeting.  The troops appreciate everything we send and it is good for us to know we are able to support them. Look forward to seeing you on Thursday, March 6th at the Ramada in Sunnyvale.

Regards,

Ellen Longworth,

President, SVRWF

LEGISLATION

California Update from CRWF and other sources:

The Other Side -- There will be a transition of power and leadership in the Senate on the Democrat side as a result of the failure of Proposition 93. The Democrat leadership has picked Senator Darrell Steinberg (D-6) to follow in Don Perata’s place as president pro tem of the Senate. Senator Darrell Steinberg (D-6) will be a strong and formidable adversary. Senator Darrell Steinberg was elected in 2006 and will term out in 2014. He will become president pro tem at the end of 2008. Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez will stay in power until the end of this year and after Democrats finds a replacement. As of Friday 8, 2008 there was no one Democrat Assembly member who had a lock on the leadership position.  – CRWF Newsletter February 2008

Governor signs budget bills.  By Judy Lin, Sacramento Bee, 2.20.08

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed six budget-trimming bills Saturday and urged lawmakers not to wait until summer to act on the next round of cuts because state revenue could slip by another $1 billion.

"There is much more to come; this is only the beginning," Schwarzenegger said during a signing ceremony in his Los Angeles district office. Lawmakers on Friday sent the governor a package of bills to avert a cash shortage this spring by making some of the spending reductions he requested to deal with a projected $14.5 billion deficit. While they reduced education spending in the current fiscal year, lawmakers did not take up his more politically charged proposals to exempt lower-risk parolees from supervision and cut Medi-Cal benefits for adults. Schwarzenegger, citing a report due next week that could show the state's deficit has worsened by $1 billion, said the Legislature should get back to work next week in order to maximize savings in the 2008-09 budget years, which begins July 1. "The reason why it is very important that we make those cuts right away is because it takes months for cuts to take effect," Schwarzenegger said. "So the faster they make those decisions the easier it will be, and the better it will be for the next budget year." Traditionally, the Legislature waits for the governor to make budget revisions in May before hammering out a spending plan for the new fiscal year. But given the negative impact of the housing market on the state economy, Schwarzenegger last month declared a fiscal emergency, which forced the Legislature to come up with the proposals the governor signed Saturday. So far, the crisis-averting moves largely involve accounting maneuvers to delay paying bills. Schwarzenegger acknowledged that spending hasn't slowed. He said the state should adopt a mechanism to address spending when revenues fall, and he pushed for establishing a rainy day fund. "When revenues go down, we should not really go and start cutting education," the governor said. "It's not fair to the kids. It's not fair to the education community."

Lucrative jobs protect planet -- The left constantly gripes that the reason conservatives refute the legitimacy of “global warming” is that conservatism is purely profit driven. The problem is that leftists either don’t know or don’t care that consensus is not a legitimate scientific concept. Liberals promote global warming as a means to power, fame and wealth. For example, one of the so-called climate change “crusaders,” San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, just created a job entitled Director of Climate Protection Initiatives. The position will pay a cool $160,000 annually and with a title like that, it would seem as though it would entail a great deal of responsibility. However, this is just the latest string of new job creations by Mayor Newsom. The city of San Francisco currently has two dozen employees working on so-called “climate” issues, costing taxpayers hundreds of thousands annually. Apparently, it is proponents of environmental hysteria, not doomsday skeptics, who are motivated purely by profit. -- Patriot Post 02.20.08.

National Update from NRWF and other sources:

Nominees twisting in the wind -- As President Bush’s second term draws to a close, we note a lingering problem, persistent for most of his two terms. There are over 180 qualified nominees presented to the Senate by the President that have yet to receive a confirmation vote. The President went after Democrats on the issue once again, saying, “When men and women agree to serve in public office, we should treat them with respect and dignity, and that means giving them a prompt confirmation vote.” What many don’t realize is that there are dozens and dozens of unfilled positions in the Federal Aviation Administration, the Federal Reserve, the Department of Justice and other important federal agencies because Senate Democrats would rather play partisan politics than fulfill their constitutional duty. Some of the most important vacancies are on the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals, which has turned decidedly left as a result. “These delays are irresponsible, they undermine the cause of justice, and I call on the United States Senate to give these nominees the up or down vote they deserve,” the President said. However, with President Bush in his last year in office and Democrats banking on one of their own to win the White House in November, it is unlikely they will fill these vacancies now, hoping to populate the bureaucracy with their fellow travelers next year. --  Patriot Post 02.20.08.

From the Campaign Trail

“In 1963, John F. Kennedy was murdered in Texas by a fervent admirer of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. In 2008, a large Cuban flag emblazoned with the image of Che Guevara, Castro’s brutal henchman, is prominently displayed in a Barack Obama campaign volunteer office in Houston. Obama has been widely compared to JFK, most notably by the late president’s brother and daughter. President Kennedy, a stalwart anticommunist, despised Castro and his gang of totalitarian thugs. But when word broke last week that Obama’s supporters in Houston work under a banner glorifying Che, the campaign’s reaction was to brush it off as an issue involving volunteers, not the official campaign. After two days of controversy, the campaign issued a statement calling the flag ‘inappropriate’ and saying its display ‘does not reflect Senator Obama’s views.’ Would JFK have reacted so mildly?... That this sadistic thug’s face also adorns the office of a U.S. presidential candidate’s supporters is appalling and disgraceful. That the candidate couldn’t bring himself to say so is even worse.” Jeff Jacoby

UPDATE: Adopt-A-Chaplain

Special Project:  Have you ever wondered what’s on the minds of our young men and women in harm’s way?  A recurring request I hear is “PLEASE DON’T FORGET US.”  This past week a chaplain’s assistant wrote us on behalf of an incoming ministry team.  I answered his e-mail and his reply really struck me.  He said, “I really appreciate you taking your time to simply write us.  Thank you for being so generous.”  SSG GR – Write a note to a service member and bring it to the meeting along with donations needed.  Special requests came in this month for inexpensive harmonicas and powered drink mixes.

Making friends on the street

Thank you so much for taking the time to send a "Care Package" my way.  I am sincerely grateful.  Also, please know that a lot of what you sent regarding the candy will be gladly received by the children in one of our Mujallah’s tomorrow as I go out on patrol with one of our Companies.  Here is a sample of the kids who will just run up to you.  There are so many beautiful children in this country, and they are pretty much crazy for 'chocolate' pronounced 'chok-ahh-latte'.  So, I thank you on their behalf as well.  God bless you!  Please remember us in your prayers!  Ch RF
