Pat Dando is a 30 year resident and has a distinguished record of public service throughout San Jose and the state.  Serving as the current President and CEO of the San Jose Chamber of Commerce,  Pat Dando endorsed Gov. Schwarzenegger for re-election and supported the 2006 bond measure to rebuild California’s infrastructure.  She has also served as Director of Local Government Affairs for the Governor addressing issues such as public safety, flooding, transportation, housing, health care, and economic development.  Mrs. Dando spent nearly a decade on the San Jose City Council, elected in 1995 and re-elected in 2000.  In 2003 she was appointed Vice Mayor for the City of San Jose, a position she held until 2005.  Prior to service on City Council, Pat was Senior Policy Advisor to San Jose Mayor Tom McEnery and Assistant to the Executive Director of the San Jose Redevelopment Agency focusing on transportation issues.  Her community work includes roles as president and board member of several organizations and serving on multiple boards including Good Samaritan Hospital and Santa Clara University of Fellows. Let’s all welcome Pat Dando to our meeting May 3rd and listen to her speak about the Chamber of Commerce.  Bring a friend!

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

And now the rest of the story.  Our speaker Dr. Joseph McNamara stood and talked to us for three quarters of an hour.  He told Carol Greenfield an I that only six months ago he had a malignant mole removed from his leg.  It was serious enough that they took  a large section from the calf of his leg.  The doctor thinks he got it all.  He feels he is doing well!  It was  a pleasure for  me to see him again after so many years.  In 1986 I invited him to come to a community meeting in Almaden Valley to talk about crime in San Jose.  He was such a good speaker then and he gave us a good talk at our luncheon.  He was so right when he said our country is in denial!  The enemy we’re facing plans to kill us all.

Having written all of this, I thank God that thanks to our brave men and women in the armed forces all of us are able to live so well, feeling free, able to believe in democracy  and carry on our way of life.  I just wish our country could be united as we were in WWII.  Everyone was happy they could help defeating our enemies.  I hope and pray everyday that the hate and political destroying of people will stop.

Our guest speaker is Pat Dando for May 3rd.  She has been active in the Republican Party for quite a few years.  At present she is with the Chamber of Commerce in Santa Clara County.  I am looking forward to hearing her.

Eleanor Patten and I are going to attend the Advocacy Workshop in Sacramento.  Maybe after I give a report on how interesting it is to be there you’ll decide to go next year.  I do hope all of you will be at our next meeting.  Remember  that we Republican Women have lots of power and we surely need to use it in times like these.

Remember to mark your calendars for our June 6th evening program.  George Marotta and his partner will give a presentation on the “30 Most Famous Women of the World”.   This will be a dinner meeting at the Ramada in Sunnyvale.  We have heard Mr. Marotta speak on World Economics recently, we are happy to have him return and enlighten us some more.  Come, bring a friend and enjoy an outstanding evening.

Ellen Longworth,

President, SVRWF

California Update from CRWF

AB 279, Huff (R-60) would make it a crime for people to protest at funerals of military personnel.

Existing law makes it a crime for a person to disturb, obstruct, detain, or interfere with any person carrying or accompanying human remains to a cemetery or funeral establishment, or engaged in a funeral service or an interment.

SB 752-- This bill proposes that all children born in California be given a 500 dollar savings account to be redeemed when they turn 18. Existing law establishes various programs to provide financial assistance to California children and their families. This bill would enact the California Kids Investment and Development Savings (KIDS) Account Act that would create in the State Treasury an investment account for every child born in California each year beginning on or after January 1, 2008, and would provide for a one-time deposit by the state to each account in the amount of $500 at the child's birth, as provided. This bill is currently in the Senate committee on revenue and taxation. Please call and write these committee members and let them know that you do not support this piece of legislation.

AB 107 -- This bill would ensure that companies who receive state contracts only hire employees legally allowed to work in the state of California. The State Contract Act authorizes the Department of General Services, or any other department with authority to enter into
