On September 30, October 1 & 2, I traveled to Irvine for the California Federation of Republican Women’s Biennial Convention. There were approximately 670 attendees and was a very successful convention. The highlight of the convention was the banquet dinner Saturday evening honoring the military wives. CFRW paid for buses to transport the women from the military bases, baby sitters to care for their children while they had the evening out, a lovely dinner and a nice gift. There were 270 wives of Marines, Army and Navy who traveled the 2 hour bus trip for the evening. Speaker for the evening was Judge Kenneth Star and the entertainment was provided by 30 children (3 to 14 years old) providing a program based on the constitution and patriotism. Silicon Valley Republican Women hosted 3 military wives. The outgoing president, Martha House, was also honored for her service to the federation.
Officers for 2006-2007 were elected and installed at the convention.

Statement by RNC Chairman Mehlman on the
Nomination of Harriet Miers
Monday, October 03, 2005
WASHINGTON –RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman issued the following statement on President Bush’s nomination of Harriet Miers to the United States Supreme Court.
“President Bush has once again, after thoughtful deliberation and consultation, nominated an outstanding person in Harriet Miers to serve on the Supreme Court. Harriet Miers has had a trailblazing career as one of the top lawyers in the country and is extraordinarily well qualified to serve on the Supreme Court. “As the top advisor to the President responsible for selecting outstanding judges like John Roberts, Priscilla Owen, and Janice Rogers Brown, Harriet Miers has demonstrated her commitment to the principle that judges must not legislate from the bench, but rather strictly interpret the Constitution with respect for the law. “John Roberts’ confirmation, like the process that put Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the court, showed the American people that the overwhelming majority of Senators put principle before partisanship. As Harriet Miers’ confirmation process moves forward, all Americans hope that their Senators will follow the Roberts and Ginsburg precedents, and reject Howard Dean’s advice to obstruct the process.”
Democrats are banking that anti-war sentiment will be their ticket to electoral victories in 2006. They've lined up a slate of six congressional candidates spread across Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Maryland and Virginia who are all veterans of the war in Iraq and sounding off on how President Bush is mishandling that same war. Paul Hackett, the Iraq war veteran who narrowly lost this summer's special election in Ohio's 2nd District to Republican Jean Schmidt, has announced that he is going to challenge Mike DeWine for the Senate next year. Demo strategists believe that Hackett's performance was a sign that voters are tired of the war and want to make a significant change at the ballot box. But one special election in an off year in one Ohio district is hardly a large enough sample on which to determine a trend. It's difficult to know if any of these single-issue candidacies will succeed, but if these veterans are as liberal in other matters as the Demos hope they are, their victory is far from assured -- 05-41 Digest, Federalist Patriot (FederalistPatriot.US)

Final Results Released in 48th District Election -- LA TIMES, 10/12/05
Republican state Sen. John Campbell of Irvine emerged with 45.5% of the vote in last week's special election to succeed Rep. Christopher Cox (R-Newport Beach) in the 48th Congressional District, according to final results posted Monday.
Residents: Keep water in river -- The water agency delivering 225 million gallons of Yosemite National Park water daily to the Bay Area faces a fight to get 25 million gallons more per day by 2030. One by one Tuesday night, environmentalists, residents and community activists urged the San Francisco Public Utility Commission to scale back water forecasts and include more conservation and restoration in its $4 billion effort to retrofit and upgrade the aging Hetch Hetchy water system. --Oakland Tribune -- 10/12/05
Silicon Valley leaders fight Prop. 73 -- The buzz around the upcoming special election may mostly be about education, budget and political fundraising reforms, but Silicon Valley leaders are spending a lot of their money to defeat Proposition 73, the initiative that would require parental notification when a minor seeks an abortion. San Jose Mercury, 10/11/05
Drafting issue in tenure measure -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's teacher tenure initiative contains a little-noticed provision that appears to retroactively deny tenure to some teachers who have already earned it. A lawyer for the California Teachers Association calls it a drafting error that could unfairly take tenure from roughly 18,000 teachers. The governor's lawyer disputes the contention. Sacramento Bee -- 10/12/05
Unions Spending Lavishly -- Led by public employee unions, organized labor has raised more than $80 million in its effort to defeat the initiatives promoted by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, campaign finance reports show. With a month left before the Nov. 8 special election, unions, particularly those representing state and local civil servants, could shatter California spending records for ballot measure battles. Los Angeles Times -- 10/12/05

TEACHERS UNION NEARLY BROKE! -- October 10, 2005
SACRAMENTO – A sworn affidavit from the California Teachers Association (CTA) reveals the union is heavily financially leveraged and had already spent, as of 9/30/05, every penny of the $50 million it raised to fight Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s reforms. The document also reveals that the union is attempting to secure an additional $40 million line of credit, on top of at least $34 million in existing loans. The document states that failure to obtain this loan would result in “great financial harm” for the union. It also indicates for the first time that the recent $60-a-year assessment forced on members was needed to “maintain fiscal solvency. To make matters worse for the CTA, passage of Proposition 75, which gives public employee union workers the right to decide if they want their union dues spent on politics, could significantly hinder the union’s ability to repay this mountain of debt. www.joinarnold.com/c.itJUJ9MTIuE/b.1101007/k.EE72/Animation/siteapps/email/spreadWord.aspx Proposition 76: Curb on spending - or a 'power grab'? -- The jury is out on whether Proposition 76 would actually deliver what its backers promise: an end to California's chronic budget troubles. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says the spending control measure will smooth out the effects of the volatile budget cycles that have left California swimming in surpluses in certain years and drowning in debt in others. Sacramento Bee -- 10/12/05 Labor fights for paycheck fee control -- For Kevin Brown, "paycheck protection" this year would have amounted to something on the order of $231.71. That's how much money was taken from his paycheck, anyway, and spent on political activities by the public employee union that represents him in collective bargaining. Sacramento Bee -- 10/11/05
Proposition 77: It serves 'em right, but not us -- Democratic legislators - and a few Republican members of Congress as well - are frothing over Proposition 77, the initiative that would take the power to reapportion California's political districts from the Legislature and hand it to a panel of three retired judges. Sacramento Bee -- 10/12/05
Political boundary battle hits ballot for 6th time / Awareness growing, say Prop. 77 backers, including governor -- Supporters of Proposition 77 are hoping the sixth time is a charm. Since 1982, five initiatives to change the way California draws its political boundaries have made the ballot. Not one of those redistricting measures has become law. San Francisco Chronicle -- 10/12/05
Lights out on Prop. 80. Proposition 80, an initiative that would drastically alter the regulation of electricity utilities in California, is a destabilizing force at a time when the system desperately needs stability. The initiative touches on issues that deserve some attention. But voters should be wary of regulating this world themselves, particularly when the assigned regulators seem to have learned from mistakes of the past and generally are heading in the right direction. Rock giants U2 unhappy to be politicians' cash cows -- Oct 12 , 2005 |
|
Rock giants U2 have expressed outrage that US politicians from both main parties, including Hillary Clinton, are using their concerts to fill campaign coffers. "The U2 concerts are categorically not fundraisers for any politician. They are rock concerts for U2 fans," a statement from the group's publicist said. Senator Clinton has "invited" 18 people to join her on October 19 in a luxury suite at Washington's MCI Center to see U2 play during their sold-out Vertigo tour, as long as they contribute 2,500 dollars to the Democratic Party.
Luxury suites at the center cost 7,000 dollars and offer a close-up view of the stage.
"We do a meet-and-greet with the senator, and then go in and listen to music," said Ann Lewis, the former first lady's spokeswoman. Pennsylvania Republican Senator Rick Santorum is holding a 1,000-dollar-a-head fundraiser at U2's show in Philadelphia this weekend.

Diversity proponents unite! As if we actually needed any more proof that America's academicians were more or less Marxists, the Leadership Institute reports in "Deep Blue Campuses" that the vast amount of their 2004 campaign donations went to John Kerry. By analyzing the Federal Election Commission's records, they found that at the nation's top 20 elite universities, President Bush received $1 for every $10 that went to Kerry. Some notables include Harvard (25:1), Yale (more than 20:1), Princeton (302:1), and Dartmouth, where not a single recorded Bush donation was found. It is certainly high time that "diversity" actually came to mean political diversity on our campuses. Race-based discrimination under the auspices of "diversity" might satisfy many tenured professors and administration officials, but real diversity includes, well, everyone. -- 05-41 Digest -Federalist Patriot (FederalistPatriot.US)
The European Union and the UN International Telecommunications Union are again trying to wrest governance of the Internet from the United States. "We will not agree to the United Nations taking over management of the Internet," said State Department official David Gross. (Al Gore, progenitor of the Internet, was unavailable for comment.) The EU-niks say they're proposing a new "cooperative model" management of the Internet and the way domain names are assigned. One of the primary reasons for such a takeover, says EU spokesman David Hendon, is that many countries "just cannot accept that the Americans have control of the Internet in their countries."

Hutchison Unveils Bill to Bolster State and Local Immigration Enforcement
Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) introduced S. 1823 last Wednesday, legislation to give state and local officials expanded authority to arrest, detain and prosecute illegal aliens as well as create a Volunteer Border Marshall Program. Under the proposed Volunteer Border Marshall Program, trained, state-licensed peace officers could be sworn in and assigned to the Border Patrol on temporary missions to identify and control illegal immigration and human and drug trafficking. -- http://www.fairus.org/site/PageServer?pagename=leg_legislationlistaa70
"The immigration issue has nothing to do with race, ethnicity, religion, or country of origin insofar as I am concerned. Rather, it is a simple question of numbers, costs and perhaps most importantly, social and cultural cohesion." — Rep. Tom Tancredo
On the Hill, Louisiana Senators Mary Landrieu and David Vitter, a Democrat and a Republican, are preparing a money grab of epic proportions in the name of rebuilding the hurricane-devastated Gulf region. PELICAN (Protecting Essential Louisiana Infrastructure, Citizens, and Nature) would bring up to $250 billion to the state, leaving victims in Mississippi, Alabama and Texas to scrape for whatever's left. The aptly named bill (Louisiana is known as the Pelican State) would deliver, among other trinkets, $5 billion for mortgage relief, $400 million for substance abuse and mental-health services, and $750 million for a "teacher-incentive fund" (read: bureaucratic slush fund). This plan looks suspiciously more like welfare writ large than infrastructure redevelopment, but in this spend-happy Congress, there are few with the courage to call it by its real name -- 05-41 Digest, Federalist Patriot
"Given the abysmal failure of state and local officials in Louisiana to plan adequately for or respond to the effects of Hurricane Katrina on the city of New Orleans, and given the long history of public corruption in Louisiana, I hope the House will refrain from directly appropriating any funds from the public treasury to either the state of Louisiana or the city of New Orleans. The head of the FBI in New Orleans just this past year described the state's public corruption as 'epidemic, endemic and entrenched.' Over the last 30 years, a long list of Louisiana politicians have been convicted of crimes; the list includes a governor, an attorney general, an elections commissioner, an agriculture commissioner, three successive insurance commissioners, a congressman, a federal judge, a State Senate president, six other state legislators, and a host of appointed officials, local sheriffs, city councilmen and parish police jurors. I am not confident that Louisiana officials can be trusted to administer federal relief aid." —Rep. Tom Tancredo
"The departure of Tom DeLay from his post as House Majority Leader is being viewed with cautious optimism by budget-cutting conservatives. After Mr. DeLay's indictment last week, they were able to block the appointment of Californian David Dreier to replace Mr. DeLay and give the post to Majority Whip Roy Blunt instead. Now, the conservatives are saying they will demand new leadership elections in January unless Speaker Dennis Hastert pushes forward with spending cuts to offset the lavish spending on Hurricane Katrina relief efforts." —John Fund
"It is a very dangerous doctrine to consider the judges as the ultimate arbiters of all constitutional questions. It is one which would place us under the despotism of an oligarchy." —Thomas Jefferson
"[T]he fact remains that on the major legal debates of her time, Ms. Miers has remained largely silent, perhaps this is because she hasn't had the public opportunity to express her views, but a rational worry is that she doesn't have well developed opinions about the reach into state prerogatives of the Commerce Clause, the separation of powers, the First Amendment's Establishment Clause, the breadth of the right to privacy, and so on. The lesson of other Republican nominees without such fixed views—Harry Blackmun, [David] Souter, Anthony Kennedy—is that they always drift to the left once they get on the Court." —The Wall Street Journal
"USA Today reported Friday that gasoline sales are down fifteen percent. They said high gas prices are wiping out cigarette, candy and soft drink sales. There's a risk everyone could live to a hundred and bankrupt the entire Social Security system." —Argus Hamilton
"What if I told you that there was a magic bullet—something that would improve the quality of your daily life, your children's chances of success in the world, your family's health, our values as a society? Something that is inexpensive, simple to produce and within the reach of pretty much anyone? Miriam Weinstein begins her book 'The Surprising Power of Family Meals' with those two questions and then suggests that the 'magic bullet' missed by so many families is as simple as a shared meal. A 2003 survey indicated that children and teens who share dinner with their families five or more nights a week were far less likely to have tried alcohol, cigarettes or marijuana. 'Those who eat lots of family dinners are almost twice as likely to get A's in school as their classmates who rarely eat as a family.' Now that's something to chew on. Launch a revolution. Have dinner as a family." —Albert Mohler
FAIR applauds Rep. John Doolittle's (R-CA) introduction of H.R. 4032 last week, legislation to expand expedited removal of illegal aliens and bar banks from issuing home mortgages to illegal aliens. It is long past time that the current "catch and release" policy that masquerades as immigration enforcement be ended once and for all. This bill would end the practice by requiring the use of expedited removal of illegal aliens, which requires they be detained until being removed. In addition, banks in several states are increasingly aiding and abetting illegal immigration by providing mortgage loans to illegal aliens who can be deported at any time. By barring this practice, the bill adds needed teeth to one of the oldest laws on the books against illegal immigration; harboring.

From the states, amidst possibly trumped up charges against Majority Leader Tom DeLay in Texas, two New Mexico Democrats find themselves under indictment for bribery. State Treasurer Robert Vigil and former Treasurer Michael Montoya are charged with taking individual bribes in amounts of up to $10,000 to invest public funds with three financial consultants. One of the consultants is now cooperating with prosecutors. Montoya is accused of taking well over $600,000 in all and told the now turncoat consultant that "the kickback is the way we do business in New Mexico." "If you want to understand the Left, the best place to start is with an understanding of hysteria. Leading leftists either use hysteria as a political tactic or are actually hysterics. Take almost any subject the Left discusses and you will find hysteria... America neglects its poor, beats up its gays, oppresses its women, fouls its environment, ignores its children's educations, denies blacks their votes, and invades other countries for corporate profits: These are common accusations of the Left. No event is free of leftist hysteria. On the third day after Katrina, civil rights activist Randall Robinson reported that blacks in New Orleans were resorting to cannibalism. Indeed, most of the news media coverage bordered on the hysterical. Not to mention the hysterical predictions of 10,000-plus dead in New Orleans... [T]he irony in all of this is that the Left sees itself as the side that thinks intellectually and non-emotionally. And that is hysterical. – Dennis Preger

To the Wonderfully Awesome Women of the California Federation of Republican
Women, and their spouses:
First and foremost, I would like to thank you all for what you do, and for
what
you stand for. I was blessed enough to be able to attend your event for
Military
Wives, held in Irvine on October 1st, 2005. I want you to know, it was an
amazing evening that I will absolutely never forget. I will be forever
grateful
to you and your organization for hosting such an event. I have never been so
touched in my entire life. Your generosity and sincerity was overwhelming.
For most of us, our husbands had recently deployed to Iraq for the 2nd time.
We
have been a bit down, and feeling a little lost. Your event lifted us up so
high
and I am not even sure when we’ll come back down. Knowing that women as
wonderful as yourselves support us, and understand the challenges we face
everyday, just makes it so much easier to accept what they choose to do.
You made us feel like celebrities. Thank you. Attending this dinner, I
remembered the obstacles that were overcome in order for us, women, to be
allowed vote. That is something I can never forget. A lot of women don’t
even
know the history behind women’s ability to vote. I think if they did, more
women
would vote. You made us remember why our husbands are serving this wonderful
country. You made us remember to be proud of not only them, but also
ourselves.
I sometimes forget what an awesome sacrifice we give for the safety of our
citizens, as well as those of other countries. Our sacrifice is something
most
will never fully understand, but you have recognized that we too, give up
something, when we say good bye to our husbands as they leave to far and
distance shores. Never knowing if they will return, and our lives, we
thought we
had all planned, will have to be re-planned and organized. God willing, they
will return and we can go on with our lives, but that is not always His
plan.
Which, is something that we must accept; a reality we must face everyday. I
cannot thank you enough.
I hope that you will be able to continue to hold this annual event for our
service members’ wives. It is an amazing inspiration and a wonderful
opportunity
to show us what this awesome country is all about. It also reminds us of
what
OUR duty is to this country as women.
The California Federation for Republican Women is awesome. I hope to one
day, be
privileged enough to be a part of your organization, and help others make
educated decisions regarding voting and be an active part of my community,
wherever that may be.
May God bless you all, as you have blessed us.
Sincerely,
Angel Hernandez (who also happens to be a proud California Voting
Republican) on
behalf of the wives for the 1st Marine Division, 3rd Amphibious Assault
Battalion, Bravo Company of Camp Pendleton California (Jacki Kirchner,
