SILICON VALLEY REPUBLICAN WOMEN FEDERATED NEWSLETTER Diamond Award ClubSeptember 2003 President: Laura Ann Riffle 263-0990 1st V.P & Program: Doris Whitney 997-0581 2nd V.P. Barbara Ferguson 739-0795 Shirley. Harvey Newsletter Editor (408) 253-1591 PRESIDENT’S LETTER Welcome back from our summer break. It certainly has been eventful, politically speaking. This recall does give us a chance to get a Republican in office so… think before you cast your ballot. We do have several good candidates running each with their own merits but only one can win the race. I know we all want to do what we can to advance the Republican Party in the state, so if the SVRWF is called on to man voter registration booths or to do anything to help in the election, we will have our telephone volunteers calling to enlist your help. If you are available please say, "Yes." This year we have three of our own running for offices for the Northern Division: Shirley Harvey, Doris Whitney, and Alice Wilson. So, we would like to have as many ladies as possible going to our Fall Conference. If you are interested please let me know. The club will pay your registration. WE DO NEED SOMEONE TO EITHER TAKE OVER OUR NEWSLETTER OR TO WORK WITH THE HARVEY’S ON IT. They have put in over seven years and have done an exemplarily job, but with family and friends all over the country, they would like a little freedom to travel without having to be home to put our letter together. If you have an interest please contact me or the Harvey’s ASAP. Our nominating committee will be chosen at our September 4th meeting and elections will be held at our November 6th meeting. If you are interested in serving on our board please let us know. Welcome back again and please invite your friends to join us for a meeting and see if they would be interested in joining. See you September 4th.

In the United States, it falls on September 17. On that day, in 1787, delegates from 12 states signed the document that established a new form of government for the nation. Constitution Day is not a national holiday. But many American communities observe it with ceremonies, programs, and meetings. The signing of the Constitution of the United States climaxed a four-month session of debates in Independence Hall in Philadelphia. George Washington presided over the session that began on May 25. The convention proposed to ensure the rights that the Declaration of Independence had declared inalienable. The Constitution became one of the most important documents in history. It has served as a model for nearly every country that has adopted a constitutional form of government. These countries celebrate the adoption with their own Constitution Day.

CFRW WELCOMES NEW LEGISLATIVE ADVOCATE By Joy Stewart, President, CFRW It is with a great deal of pleasure that, as President, I take this opportunity to introduce the new California Federation of Republican Women Legislative Advocate, Katie Culliton. Katie recently graduated from the University of California, Davis with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a minor in Latin. In addition, she has studied Ancient Greek and Modern French. While attending college, she was the assistant manager at a retail store and worked for the then California Secretary of State, Bill Jones, in the Business Filings Division. Katie brings a wealth of enthusiasm and knowledge to our Legislative Advocate’s office. We are delighted that, even though Janine Bedley is leaving us to further her education in law school, she is very efficiently working to train Katie in the duties of being our advocate. Katie has already registered as the CFRW Lobbyist and attended many legislative committee meetings on our behalf. She is now writing the “Advocate Weekly Updates” for our e-mail members and the Web Site. Katie has truly “hit the ground running” for CFRW in Sacramento and she adds, “I look forward to advocating CFRW’s positions at the State Capitol.” On behalf of the CFRW Executive Committee and our members, we welcome Katie Culliton to CFRW. |
